Of trees and mushrooms

Once upon a time in America, great leafy high-arching cathedrals of elms lined the streets of villages and cities from the Atlantic to the Rockies, casting a deep cool shade upon life's turmoil. Phil McCombs
A couple of weeks ago I spotted a crew working on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall trees. One of the men said the elms were getting their annual preventive treatments against Dutch Elm Disease.
A fungicide has to be injected into the base of the trees every 2 to 3 years to provide ongoing control and so this is what the trees looked like that morning.
Below: Decaying elm trees provide the best growing conditions for the wonderful morels (but you can find them growing near living ash, poplar, aspen and maples on sandy soils, as well). The growing season in our area is April through June.
